Credit where it's due
I congratulate the Transportation Security Administration on doing certain things right.

Security screening doesn't make me feel terribly safe. I accidentally carried my knife to and from LA on the plane with no one stopping me. In fact the only time I've had something taken from me was a bottle of rum I bought at the duty free shop *past* security in Point-a-Pitre that security took away from me on landing in the US because it wasn't checked.

I've had a 2-inch pocket knife confiscated once, back when they still have national guardsmen with empty M16s guarding the checkpoints. The same trip, I also saw them send a pilot (uniformed, with proper ID, and personally known by the screeners) back through the checkpoint after the aluminum foil wrapping his burrito set off the metal detector.

In terms of actual optimal airline security, I'm pretty sympathetic to the semi-facetious "NRA Airlines -- 10% discount for open carry!" proposal I've seen on slashdot.

Who knows. Variability in enforcement, however, is seriously problematic because it doesn't provide clear signaling.

The SeaTac TSA people are awesome. I've flown in and out of a lot of airports (Multiple places in CA, Kansas, Missouri, Boston, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas) and the people in WA are by far the best, so far. They are pleasant, efficient, and professional.

That's my experience, too. San Jose has the worst TSA experience I've run into, but that's mainly because there isn't room in the terminal for more than a handful of x-ray machines and for a line that doesn't snake out into the parking garage.

I'll keep that in mind the next time we have to plan around you flying down to the area. However, San Jose airport is MUCH more conveniently located then San Francisco airport, so I imagine we may have to stick with that, regardless of how well organized their security is.

SJC has awkward security, but even there it rarely takes longer than 10-15 minutes to clear it, compared to 5-10 minutes at SeaTac. SFO has its own set of problems, not least of which is that the majority of flights I've had into or out of it have been delayed due to fog.

If it makes you feel any better, we're flying out of SFO for the honeymoon. The tickets to Palm Springs were far cheaper from there.

Yeah, I'll check SFO when the other end of my itinerary is somewhere weird, because sometimes it is significantly cheaper, but from here or from the SoCal airports (SNA, LGB, and LAX) SJC is almost always quicker and cheaper.
